The major piece that we will be doing, thanks to the Daniel Jones Memorial Music Fund, is La Fiesta de la Posada by Dave Brubeck. Best known as a jazz pianist and composer, Brubeck also wrote orchestral and sacred music. As he was growing up in southern California, Brubeck absorbed Mexican folk music and culture. The jazz, sacred, classical and Mexican influences can all be heard in this work, which basically tells the Christmas story, with words based directly or adapted from scripture (Isaiah, Luke 1 and 2, Matthew 2, John 1, Romans 8). The piece complements nicely Lake Street Church's recent decision to provide "sanctuary" to an immigrant if needed, likely someone from Latin America. It is also a substantial piece, musically, and a celebratory work. We would love to have you join us. Rehearsals will take place on Wednesday evenings, from 8:15 to 9 p.m., starting on October 29. There will also be a final rehearsal on Saturday morning Dec. 20.
