Two very different pieces of music will be performed at LSC's morning service: Georg Philipp Telemann's Magnificat in C with strings, trumpets & timpani; and Ariel Ramierez' Navidad Nuestra with guitar, percussion and more.
For over 2000 years the Christmas story has resonated and been celebrated the world over. In this worship concert, we present two diverse musical manifestations of those resonances and celebrations. These two works – which come from different eras, geographic regions, and cultures – give us the opportunity, in a third land and culture, to celebrate God’s presence among us today. In 1705, the young German protestant composer Georg Philipp Telemann set the words of Mary (the Magnificat) in Baroque style for choir and soloists, strings, trumpets, and timpani. Telemann masterfully conveys both the powerful message of “raising up the lowly” and the tender expressions of awe and gratitude for God’s mercy that coexist in Mary’s song. Just over 50 years ago, Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez collaborated with poet Felix Luna to create Navidad Nuestra, based on folk materials from their native region. Guitar, percussion, and trumpets accompany the choir with Latin rhythms and textures. The music, as well as the poetic words that reference places in Latin America, offer us another view of the Christmas story, a new perspective of its joy, and a greater understanding of “God With Us” in the midst of the vulnerability and struggles of life.
